Episode 27: Decanted Delusions
English Asylum Patient 1869
Insane Asylum's are known for horrific abuse in their earlier forms. Not much was known about treating mental illness in the 19th century.

Ohio State Mental Hospital 1946
In 1949 there was no DSM to help with diagnosing mental illness.

Washington Psychiatric Hospital 1949
The first DSM was not published until 1952 to provide guidance for diagnosing and treatment. Here we see a lobotomy that was invented in 1935 and was used to treat both depression and psychosis. There were long term physical effects to this procedure and it was often done without patient's consent.

David Rosenhan
Rosenhan conducted an experiment in the 1970's designed to prove that there was inconsistency in diagnosis of mental illness with the DMS II which was in use at the time. His outcomes resulted in changes and improvements to the DMS III.
